THE CHERUB COMPANY has as its mission to nurture, develop and produce non-British dramatic works in the UK.
It has been a leading creative force in British theatre over 20 years. Established in 1978 by directors Andrew Visnevski and Simon Chandler, the company has lost none of its pioneering nature under the new direction of Michael Gieleta.
Cherub’s recent productions have reinforced the company’s cultural objectives:
- to commit to the cultural testimony of people whose theatre is under-represented in the UK
- to present and translate outstanding dramatic material originating outside the UK
- to challenge social and cultural prejudice by appealing to groups socially excluded from mainstream theatre in the UK
- to represent on stage ethnic and cultural communities that do not “belong” to the British theatre tradition
- to produce theatrical work that will inspire a widespread public debate to give professional opportunities to emerging theatre professionals
The Company leads a vibrant literary department led by the translator Miriam Heard. The Company’s casting director Jim Arnold is a Casting Associate of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The Artistic Director, Michael Gieleta, has worked at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Chichester Festival Theatre, Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and South Africa’s State Theatre and Cape Town Opera House and in the West End. He has directed extensively in London and internationally.
